At a time of increasing uncertainty, change and complexity, business leaders are
called upon to offer employees, shareholders and other stakeholders insightful
observations, inspiring leadership and clear direction. John
Sarno, President of the
Employers Association of New Jersey, offers leaders fresh insight, a moderate voice and
sound analysis to leverage ideas and influence public opinion.
Rediscovering Fairness
Corporate restructuring is creating tension as job security is fast becoming an artifact of the past. However, treating employees fairly can reduce the risk of litigation and maintain productivity. Encouraging workers to upgrade their skills can also facilitate fairer and less costly alternatives to litigation.
Employers are facing dramatic and rapid change in the workplace. While there is no magic bullet to successfully manage change, evidence suggests that employers who approach this challenge in a flexible manner will succeed.
The business community was stunned with the revelations that Texaco may have engaged in systematic racial discrimination at the highest executive levels. The case is a wake-up call for employers. Policies are meaningless unless management implements them from the executive suite to the shop floor.
Critics claim that Affirmative Action has failed because black employment has remained consistently twice that of whites and family income has remained consistently half that of whites. However, the debate over affirmative action will become increasingly less relevant if our educational system cannot be reformed to compete globally.
While most employers act in good faith, even the best of intentions are sometimes misinterpreted. Employment litigation continues to increase. Employers are taking steps to prevent discrimination and harassment before it occurs.
