EANJ Members Recognized as Exceptional Employers

Jun 2004

(Livingston, NJ)  Four New Jersey employers have been recognized for exceptional workplace practices by the Employers Association of New Jersey (EANJ).  Established in 1916, EANJ has strived to apply the collective experience of its 1,000-plus membership to help employers make sound and responsible employment decisions.  The Harold R. Hawkey Exceptional Employer Awards are an outgrowth of the association's work which encourage excellence and replication of best workplace practices.  This year, in addition to awarding two Exceptional Employer Awards, EANJ has carved out two special recognition awards for Best Intellectual Capital Management.

The 2004 award recipients for the Exceptional Employer Award are: CAPE ATLANTIC INTEGRATED NETWORK FOR KIDS and ORGANON PHARMACEUTICALS.  Winners of the Best Intellectual Capital Management Award are: COMCAST and SCHOOR DEPALMA.

EXCEPTIONAL EMPLOYER AWARD WINNERS

Cape Atlantic Integrated Network for Kids (http://www.capeatlanticink.org) is a private non-profit care management organization serving children with serious emotional and behavioral challenges and their families in Cape May and Atlantic Counties.  Working with children during times of crisis in their lives proves to be a very stressful job.  The goal of management is to ease some of this stress on employees with flexible time scheduling and open communication policies.  Employees have the ability to work from home and are provided with laptops to keep them connected to their work.  In a field of remarkably high turnover, Cape Atlantic INK has the second lowest staff turnover rate when compared to similar organizations.  In addition, higher levels of quality service have been demonstrated through positive satisfaction surveys from clients.

Organon Pharmaceuticals, (http://www.organon-usa.com) headquartered in Roseland, is a global pharmaceutical company with more than 13,000 employees worldwide.  One of the company's corporate objectives is for all employees to volunteer in at least one activity to support the local community during the year.  Understanding that balancing work and family is a key factor in motivating employees, the company allows employees to volunteer as part of a company team during a paid day off of work.  The program has fostered increased morale, enhanced company pride and provides employees with an enriched sense of community and social obligation.

BEST INTELLECUTAL CAPITAL MANAGEMENT AWARD WINNERS

Schoor DePalma, (http://www.schoordepalma.com) located in Manalapan, offers a complete range of engineering and consulting services to thousands of clients across the Mid-Atlantic region.    The company is committed to providing co-owners (employees are recognized as co-owner because of their stake in the Employee Stock Ownership Plan) with professional development opportunities.  In addition to offering internal and external training and workshops, the company offers a comprehensive tuition reimbursement policy and they provide co-owners with the resources necessary to publish their work in industry and trade journals.  Co-owners are encouraged to join professional and trade organizations which the company will fully fund.   Results are demonstrated through the substantial growth over the past four years, not only in the number of co-owners but in the markets served.

Comcast Cable (http://www.comcast.com) is the country's largest provider of cable services.  Comcast is dedicated to providing their employees with the tools possible for career advancement through Comcast University.  A series of programs entitled "Cornerstones…Elements of Leadership" expose lead hourly employees to courses, such as Business Ethics & Etiquette, How to Deal with Difficult Attitudes and Communication, which focus on developing each individual's leadership skills and talents.  Since the inception of the program over 15% of graduates have moved on to management positions.  The program has been so successful in the NJ facilities that it has been introduced in other Comcast locations throughout the country.

EANJ is a nonprofit trade association dedicated to improving employer-employee relations and facilitating the exchange of information among employers. It does not render legal services, offer legal opinion or engage in the practice of law.
