Jun 2003
May 20, 2003 (Livingston, NJ) Three New Jersey employers have been recognized for exceptional workplace practices by the Employers Association of New Jersey (EANJ). Established in 1916, EANJ has strived to apply the collective experience of its 1,000-plus membership to help employers make sound and responsible employment decisions. The Harold R. Hawkey Exceptional Employer Awards are an outgrowth of the association's work which encourage excellence and replication of best workplace practices.
The 2003 award recipients are: RAHWAY HOSPITAL, TWENTY ONE PLUS and HUNTSMAN POLYURETHANES.
Rahway Hospital, founded in 1917, is a 267-bed community hospital which services the city of Rahway as well as other nearby municipalities. The hospital is committed to an effective performance management system which emphasizes employee commitment, self discipline and responsibility for one's own work performance. Through recognition and reinforcement of good performance, discipline with out punishment and refocusing the role of the supervisor to that of a coach and resource person, they have been able to achieve this goal. In addition to low turnover rates, the hospital has strengthened its positive employee relations environment and raised an awareness of mutual respect and a greater realization of the unique, yet difficult, roles both the supervisor and the employee have in meeting the needs of those they service. www.rahwayhospital.com.
21 Plus, a non-profit agency located in Toms River, provides a broad scope of opportunities for developmentally disabled adults in Ocean County. Their inability to pay high wages and offer expensive benefits, due to limited funding, has not stopped them from recruiting and retaining quality employees. The company initiated a program called Project Ownership which strives for feedback, recognition, appreciation and inclusion. These goals are accomplished through committee membership, focus group participation, ongoing surveys and analysis and employee inclusion plans. The company credits Project Ownership for its 93% retention rate, which is quite remarkable in this field of remarkably high turnover. www.vitinc.com/21plus/

The integration of work and family has been a top priority for the company and they have implemented numerous programs to achieve their goal, including compressed workweeks, generous time off plans, work from home options and a company subsidized vanpool. Results can be seen in their employees long length of service, low turnover rates, reduced stress and raised levels of employee moral and job satisfaction. www.huntsman.com/pu
