Jewish Family Service of Atlantic & Cape May Counties Recognized Exceptional Employer 2009

Jun 2009

Jewish Family Service of Atlantic & Cape May Counties is a multi-service family counseling agency dedicated to promoting, strengthening and preserving individual, family, and community well-being in a manner consistent with Jewish philosophy and values. Throughout its history, Jewish Family Service (JFS) has recognized and responded to the evolving needs of the community.

The agency provides an array of social services and programs designed to meet the contemporary needs of individuals and families, regardless of race, religion, or ethnicity.

With about 75 employees, JFS, like many small employers has dedicated one full-time person to the role of human resource leader (a “Department of One”) whose primary responsibility is linking employees to the overall mission of the organization. This is accomplished by the following strategies:

  • An online employee survey was introduced, the purpose of which was to obtain honest feedback from employees concerning the quality of their work life, job satisfaction, levels of empowerment and training needs, among other areas.
  • Review of the survey results with a view toward improving the quality of work life. Among other things, JFS revised its paid time off policy to permit reasonable absences for family needs.
  • Supervisors give more consistent feedback to employees about job performance. The dialogue is a two-way street, as employees are given the room to make suggestions on improvement.
Communication gaps are recognized and corrected, through the use of flexible and easily accessible methods.
  • Recognition of employees’ excellence with an awards program and through recognition events throughout the year, such as community service days, and at an annual staff retreat.
  • Implementation of a dispute resolution procedure.

JFS’s human resources strategy has also achieved substantial bottom line results, primarily through more focused and aware employees:

  • Health care cost savings ($45,000 annual savings without cutting deeply into benefits)
  • Lower workers’ compensation rating (.957%)
  • Lower insurance premiums ($16,000 annual reduction)
