Employers must prepare for Form I-9 Audits and tougher compliance reviews!
The Trump Administration has declared that illegal immigration into the U.S. is at the top of their agenda. Emphasis on enforcement includes an increased budget for the Department of Homeland Security.
ICE reports they opened 3,510 workforce investigations and conducted 2,282 employer audits between October 1, 2017 (government fiscal year) and May 4, 2018, representing almost a60 % increase from 2016/17 when the agency conducted only 1,360 investigations during that entire fiscal year.
As of August 2016, fines for all I-9 form compliance violations doubled from previous levels. Fines now range from $110 to $1,100 per violation to $216 to $2,156 per error or omission on the form.
This session includes pertinent information on best practices for: properly completing the I-9 form; appropriate documentation, re-verifying, properly correcting errors, conducting self-audits, retention, purging, receipt rule and helpful resources.
