Understanding Wrongful Termination and Employment At Will

Printer-friendly version
Time:9am-12pm
Location:EANJ Training Room, Livingston
Sponsored by:EANJ

In New Jersey “employment at will” means that an employee can be fired at any time, for any reason or no reason at all.  However, if this was the end of the legal story, there would be no such thing as “wrongful termination.”   Importantly, it is the exceptions to the at will rule which makes up the bulk of New Jersey’s termination cases.  This 3-hour seminar will give HR managers a thorough understanding of employment at will and the five major exceptions to the rule, including:

  • Offer Letters
  • Negligent Performance Appraisals
  • Employee Handbooks and Contracts
  • Good Faith and Fair Dealing
  • Fraud and Misrepresentation
  • Violations of Clear Mandate of Public Policy
  • Retaliatory Discharge/Whistleblowing
